Percy Jackson and the Olympians dropped a teaser trailer that gives a first look into the highly-anticipated second adaptation of Rick Riordan’s bestselling novels on Disney+.
In the 33-second trailer, fans for the first time see the cast of characters in action as several clips tease the plot of the new Disney+ series.
Walker Scobell leads the series as the titular Percy Jackson, the newly discovered son of the Greek god Poseidon. Rounding out the lead cast are Leah Sava Jeffries (Beast) and Aryan Simhadri (Cheaper by the Dozen) as Annabeth Chase and Grover Underwood, Percy’s companions throughout his adventures.
The first two episodes of this all-new series will debut on December 20, 2023, with one episode released weekly afterward. The season is based on the first book of the series, Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief.
This isn’t the first time The Lightning Thief has been adapted for the screen. In 2010, 20th Century Fox released a feature film based on the tale. Original author Rick Riordan was not involved in the production of the film. Choices made in the adaptation drew criticism from the creator, who was unhappy with the sequel Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters in 2013.
For the new Disney+ series, Riordan is credited as a writer for the premiere episodes. With Riordan’s involvement in developing the television series, fans can expect it to follow the source material more faithfully.
This action-packed show also stars WWE star Edge (Adam Copeland) as Ares, Jason Mantzoukas as Dionysus, and the late Lance Reddick as Zeus in one of his final performances.
