BARBIE has surpassed $1.2 billion in revenue across the globe.
Released on July 21, 2023, in the United States, the Greta Gerwig-directed picture took only a month to pass the threshold. By last Tuesday’s measurement, $537.3 million was earned in the United States alone.
Four weekends at the number one spot in the box office has yielded a result that may have been unexpected. BARBIE officially passed Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight as Warner Brothers greatest earner in the studio’s history this week, breaking the previous record set at $536 million.
With the immense success of BARBIE, moviegoers show they are still prepared to visit the theater even with new films quickly becoming available for at-home streaming. If the theatrical success continues, BARBIE is on course to be lauded as the biggest movie of the year. Currently, another nostalgic childhood franchise holds that accolade, The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
Recent blockbuster franchises still have films on the horizon, but Marvel Studios decision to push The Marvels back to November from its original July slot, plus the release of Aqua Man and the Lost Kingdom by DC won’t be until the final week of December there won’t be much time for these films to stake their claim in 2023.
